abstract: scholars have long been interested in nonprofits, religious congregations, and their collaborative activity. this research builds upon past large-scale studies of congregations to suggest a nuanced understanding of how clergy approach congregational partnerships and make decisions about collaborating with community organizations. using qualitative data from a geographically bounded sample of 30 protestant congregations and grounded theory methodology, we suggest that clergy view their congregations as serving a different purpose from nonprofit partners and navigate numerous tensions inherent in congregational life in their pursuit of collaborative activity. we introduce a new typology of congregational collaboration that posits collaboration as a strategy for providing material and spiritual resources, in and outside of their congregations.

abstract: the reasons why people donate to charities have been extensively researched, but how this behavior relates to political values is less well understood. we also know little about how the rise of populist values among the electorate will influence charitable giving in the future. using a national election survey conducted in australia in mid-2019, this article examines the influence of populist values on charity donations. the results show that populist values are strong predictors of charitable giving and that those who hold these values are significantly less likely to donate. among those who do choose to donate, the choice of charity is also strongly influenced by populist values. these results demonstrate that the increasing importance of populist values among the public will have significant implications for the future level and direction of charity donations.

abstract: we examine the role of mediators in locally embedding the community foundation model of philanthropy to enable its global diffusion. we hold that mediators, as trusted agents within elite networks, promote and legitimate institutional innovation by tailoring the model to satisfy local requirements. they thereby limit resistance while creating future potentialities. our novel addition to the community foundation literature stems from research on the transatlantic diffusion of the community foundation template from the united states to the united kingdom focused on an in-depth case study of one of europe�s largest community foundation, that serving tyne & wear and northumberland in north east england. our findings suggest that success in embedding the community foundation model depends on rendering it fit-for-context and fit-for-purpose. mediators operating at both the macro and micro level matter because they have the cultural, social, and symbolic capital needed to win acceptance for initially alien philanthropic principles, practices, and structures.

abstract: the nature of the relationship between the time people spend on paid work and volunteering remains debated in the social sciences. time constraint theory suggests a negative relationship because people can allocate only as much time to volunteering as their work responsibilities permit. however, social integration theory suggests a more complex inverse u-shaped relationship because paid work not only limits people�s free time but also plays a key role in their social integration. departing from these competing theories, this study uses two-wave panel data from denmark to examine the relationship between hours of paid work and volunteering. in support of time constraint theory, the results suggest that hours of paid work have a significant negative effect on the total number of hours that people spend volunteering, not mainly because paid work hours affect people�s propensity to volunteer but because they affect the number of hours that volunteers contribute.

abstract: our study uses a social cognitive theory lens to examine the development of americorps� members� context-specific self-efficacy (self-efficacy to perform community service). the analysis uses panel survey data from 189 ohio state americorps members collected at the beginning and end of their service terms in 2017�2018 or 2018�2019. using a random-effects model, the results indicate that generally self-efficacy increased from beginning to end of the service term. perceptions of having performance accomplishments, having positive role models, and receiving useful feedback significantly increased self-efficacy to perform community service, while experiencing service stress diminished self-efficacy development.

abstract: this exploratory study identifies what additional work-roles local staff take on when their organization hosts a long-term international development volunteer, and explains why they do this. analyzing interview data from a sample of local employees in vietnamese organizations, the study identifies five work-roles: two that buttressed �volunteer and organization readiness� (preparing and orienting) and three that facilitated �volunteer performance� (translating, advocating, and mediating). these roles, often outside the formal work-role and expertise of the local employees, added to their cognitive and emotional loads and to a large extent went unrecognized by their employers. they were motivated by a combination of personal benefit (notably, opportunities to learn) and reciprocity norms that appear influenced, in part, by respondents� cultural conditioning. the implications of this for volunteer-involved organizations, volunteers, and locals are discussed.

abstract: decoupling theory suggests inconsistencies in what nonprofits do and what they claim to do. accountability is a potential antidote to such inconsistencies in the nonprofit sector. to test whether different features of accountability prevent decoupling, i examine the divergence in statements about managerialism among nonprofit organizations in a major u.s. metropolitan area. the analysis compares a survey of organizations to public discourse based on five-million-word website text. professionalism and evaluation indeed prevent organizations from embellishing their discourse. however, inconsistencies between managerial practices and managerial discourse remain frequent: organizations continue to present symbolic displays of managerialism to the general public, particularly when their missions are tangible. furthermore, ratings generate inconsistencies by leading organizations to downplay managerial practices. this study develops an institutional understanding of managerial talk and action, shows that the problem of decoupling in the �age of accountability� is multifaceted, and has implications for the estimation of nonprofit practices using automated text analysis.

abstract: people increasingly engage in politics on social media, but does online engagement translate to offline engagement? research is mixed with some suggesting how one uses the internet maters. we examine how political engagement on social media corresponds to offline engagement. using data following the 2016 u.s. presidential election, we find the more politically engaged people are on social media, the more likely they are to engage offline across measures of engagement�formal and informal volunteering, attending local meetings, donating to and working for political campaigns, and voting. findings offer important nuances across types of civic engagement and generations. although online engagement corresponds to greater engagement offline in the community and may help narrow generational gaps, this should not be the only means to promote civic participation to ensure all have a voice and an opportunity to help, mobilize, and engage.
