the second policynet virtual seminar was successfully held on october 17th, 2008 in meeting room 302 of sppm. ms. meng bo, director of the international cooperation and exchange office and a group of students from sppm participated in the virtual seminar. the seminar was presented by professor thomas homer-dixon, who is chair of the global systems at balsillie school of international affairs in waterloo and also professor of university of waterloo.
professor homer-dixon made his case by presenting the data that describes the seriousness of the climate and energy problems we can expect to face in the coming century. moreover, homer-dixon highlighted the triangular relationship between climate, energy and security and further demonstrated the complex, multivariate problems which global policy-making will have to address. following his presentation, students posed a range of topical questions regarding the appropriateness of existing global institutions, the challenge of addressing climate change in turbulent financial times, and role of the next us administration in combating climate change and changing energy policies.
